Gettin’ into it

Sunday, October 8th, 2006

Three weeks in New Hampshire and two MINI events under my belt. Yeah, I think this is gonna work out ok.

Today MINI of Peabody hosted their 2nd annual “Get Into It” driving event. It was a sort of customer appreciation event for them, but, as seems to be the norm around here, MINI, Mini, and general auto enthusiasts came out of the woodwork. The main draw was an autocross run by the Boston BMWCCA chapter. This was only my 3rd autocross, but I think it was the most fun. Although it was done entirely in 1st gear, it still felt fast and wasn’t so technical that it wasn’t fun. Not that it was easy, mind you: there were plenty of abused cones, and at least one car that tried to go through the finish gate sideways…. :-)

I had a blast and got to hang out with Dave, Josh, Sam, Sheena, Brent, Jason, and, of course, Jezzebel. I think my best time was down around 22.1 or 22.0 seconds, but I couldn’t seem to break 22.220 after lunch. I even got to be a passenger in my own car when Sheena took the wheel for a few. I’m not sure if I should be happy or humbled that she turned her fastest time in my car. ;-)

Or $3.059/gallon. A full tank of MINI go juice. Thank God I can afford it; I’m sure there are a ton of people who are putting less food on the table just so they can go to work.

Oh, and this is the “sale price” that the Marathon gas station does on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. Something like 1, 2 and 3¢ off per gallon on Wednesdays and premium for the same prices as mid-grade on Sunday and Monday.

I originally saw this on David Read’s car on NAM, I think. He offered to send me one, but ran out. I had Todd make up some similar decals for me, along with a batch of vinyl toggle switch labels. I’m really happy with them; hopefully I did a decent job applying them…

Dragon Drivin’

Monday, January 2nd, 2006
This was originally posted over on NAM

I spent a couple of days down around Deal’s Gap this week. I’ve got a MINI-owning friend who lives in Knoxville, about 45 minutes from the Dragon and I had a few days off from work, so what better to do than go drive? The drive from Indy to Knoxville wasn’t too bad; about 5.5 hours, all Interstate. I gave my GPS and new Valentine One a good workout on this trip. The MINI’s starting to feel like Darth Vader’s bathroom. Not that that’s a bad thing, mind you…

Thursday morning I headed toward the Gap from Knoxville. It wasn’t a great day weather-wise; mid-40s and overcast, but the roads were clear and fairly dry. I didn’t have a very good idea of the start and end point of the actual Dragon, so I basically did a run without really knowing it. I saw the signs admonishing people to stay in their own lane (I mean, duh, right?) and the motorcycle resort, but I still expected something … more, I guess. That first pass was a lot more work than I figured it would be. I was pleasantly surprised to have several cars (SUVs, mostly, of course) pull over to let me by. The grin factor kicked up a notch when I got past the Southern end of the Dragon in NC and 129 opened up a bit. That’s my kind of road.

I’d hoped to make a few laps of both the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway, and boy was I surprised to run into snow and ice above 4k feet!

I finally gave up and turned around once I took that picture. I’d gotten behind a snow plow and one other car and wasn’t having any fun. Up until the ice started, the Skyway was a lot of fun. The posted limit of 45 was sufficient to pull some lateral Gs without excessive pucker and the scenery was beautiful, of course.

Having had to bail on the Skyway, I headed back to the Dragon and did another 3 passes. I definitely got more comfortable with each successive run, but overall I was a little underwhelmed, frankly. I prefer faster stretches of road that aren’t quite so tight. By the time I’d made my fourth run, I was able to get up into 3rd gear, but that wasn’t really necessary. In all, it was an enjoyable day, and I definitely look forward to MINIs on the Dragon in May!

Friday we went to check out the Lost Squadron museum in Middlesboro, KY. That was about a 90 minute drive up through TN and into KY. It was a fairly sedate, yet scenic, drive. The museum itself is very cool. I’m an aviation and history buff and am absolutely fascinated with the story of these lost airplanes and how one P-38 was recovered 50 years after it was abandoned on the ice in Greenland. The guy running the place that day was really cool and talked flying with us for quite a while. I’d be back in the air if it weren’t for the MINI! :-)

After the museum, we trekked up to the overlook point in the Cumberland Gap park, which is apparently on the rim of a giant impact crater (which actually contains Middlesboro). We could only see some of the crater from where we were, and due to the weather, but it was pretty fascinating. And damn cold. I miss hills; I wish God would have rumpled the geography a little more around Indianapolis…

Coming back out of Middlesboro, we took route 74 West out of town, aiming for 25w & 90 in TN, which took us back down to 63 toward I-75. 74 had huge potential, but turned out to be a slick-as-snot road covered in a greasy, slimy coating of mud from coal trucks roaming the area. It started out fun and then I realized I was kind of skating around some of the corners. A quick brake-check indicated just about nil in the way of traction, and I tip-toed my way back into Tennessee. Bummer. 25W made up for it, tho. There was enough traffic to make it frustrating, but once that was dispatched, the road was fairly clean and twisty! Whee!

Today I cleaned the house. :-P

A Tribute to the General Lee

A limo:

A Ferrari:

... and a Golf:

A pretty in-depth article on the driving and stunts with Rhys Millen. Millen caught my attention when I saw him in Nissan’s video showing the making of the 2006 350Z commercial. Jalopnik’s got a link to a nice video clip of El Generál doing the sideways dance around a traffic circle. Highly recommended.

Map your MINI club

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

In continuing with the Google Maps goodness, I whacked together a bit of JavaScriptery (it’s my blog, I’ll make up words if I damn well please, thankyouverymuch) to plot MINI clubs across this great planet of ours. So, go check out the MINI Club Mappr at MotoringFile!

Jalopnik Reviews: 2006 Jeep Commander, Part 1 – Jalopnik

The Commander is as cramped as any disco era off-roader and ugly enough to make a Veyron take a dirt road.

Wow. That’s ugly!

I love Jalopnik, and Farago in particular. When they speak the truth, it’s truly brutal, in a squirt-coffee-on-the-screen kind of way.

Now, where have I seen this little “x” before?

Hrm, I think Yahoo!’s graphic designers need to take another nip of the ol’ creativity serum…

Check out the little close button in the upper-right corner of the detail view on this page:

Look familar? It should! Aside from being a fixture of just about every OS X application that uses tabs, this one seems to come directly from FireFox!

Bad Yahoo!. No cookie!

Mileage summary to date (7,258)

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

Following UKPylot’s lead, here’s my mileage summary for the first 5 months and one week of ownership, after 7,258 miles:

fuel “economy”:
best: 29.7
worst: 12.6
average: 23.2

$/gal:
best: 1.959 (June 6)
worst: 3.149 (September 14)
average: 2.621

Not bad (better than my old F-150), but not great (Nic’s Jetta got better mileage around town). Smiles per gallon is another measure entirely, however.
